Report Introduction

On July 5th, Chiba Tech’s Henkaku Center and Digital Garage hosted Japan’s first international AI safety event with the backing of the Japan AI Safety Institute. The AI safety workshop was part of a broader event, the Henkaku Center’s Symposium on Design and Science, that showcased innovative anti-disciplinary research and ongoing projects related to AI, Neurodiversity, and Education in Japan.

The workshop focused on AI safety, governance, and quality management within the Japanese context, launching what will be a series of community-building events addressing diverse AI safety topics. The event brought together a truly international cohort, with Japanese colleagues joined by researchers and practitioners from South Korea, Singapore, the United States, United Kingdom, Germany, and the Netherlands. Partners from the OECD and the Japanese government also participated, sharing the latest developments on the Hiroshima AI Process Framework.

The workshop achieved remarkable balance in its representation, drawing participants from large traditional companies, startups, academia, and government. This diversity extended across both Japanese and international practitioners, as well as technical professionals and those focused on AI governance.
